40 grams of oats: why labels and charts disagree
Quaker's US oats label lists a serving as ½ cup dry, 40 grams. Our chart uses King Arthur's figure of 89 grams per cup of rolled oats, which puts 40 g at ⅓ cup + 1 tbsp + 2 ½ tsp, a little under half a cup. Both are reasonable: oats settle differently depending on the flake size and how you fill the cup. For breakfast it makes no difference. For oat cookies or granola bars, weigh them.
Measuring 40 grams with spoons
Most ingredients at 40 grams fall between cup sizes, so the easiest route is a smaller cup topped up with spoons:
- All-purpose flour: exactly ⅓ cup, no spoons needed.
- Packed brown sugar: 3 tbsp.
- Butter: about 2.8 tablespoons, a little under 3 marks on the wrapper.
