Honey cups to grams
Honey is heavy. A cup of it weighs about 336 grams, roughly 40% more than a cup of water. Most recipes use it by the tablespoon or in small fractions of a cup, so the chart starts there.

How to measure honey without the mess
The problem with measuring honey by the cup isn't the measuring, it's getting it all back out. A good spoonful clings to the sides, and that's honey missing from your recipe. A few things help:
- Grease the cup or spoon first with a little oil or cooking spray. The honey slides right out.
- Measure the oil first if the recipe has both. The film it leaves behind does the same job.
- Or skip the cup. Put your bowl on a scale, press tare and pour honey straight in until you reach the weight. Nothing to scrape, nothing to wash.
If your honey has crystallized, set the jar in a bowl of warm water until it turns liquid again. Crystallized honey traps air and packs unevenly, so it's hard to measure accurately by volume.
A 12-ounce bottle of honey is just about 1 cup
Honey jars are sold by weight, not volume. A typical 12-ounce bear bottle holds 340 grams, which is about 1.01 cups, just over a cup. A 1-pound jar (454 g) holds about 1.35 cups. If a recipe asks for 1½ cups, one 12-ounce bottle won't be enough.
Swapping honey for sugar
Honey is sweeter than sugar and brings its own moisture, so you can't swap it cup for cup. These are the usual adjustments bakers make when using honey in place of granulated sugar:
- Use about ½ to ⅔ cup of honey for every cup of sugar, to taste.
- Reduce the other liquids by about ¼ cup for each cup of honey.
- Add about ¼ teaspoon of baking soda per cup of honey to balance its acidity.
- Lower the oven by 25°F, since honey browns faster than sugar.
Maple syrup is lighter than honey, about 312 grams per cup, and molasses is slightly heavier, about 340 grams per cup.

Why does honey weigh more than water?
Honey is mostly sugar dissolved in a small amount of water, usually less than a fifth of its weight. All that dissolved sugar makes it far denser than water, so the same cup holds much more weight.
