Half a 250-gram block of butter

Recipes from Europe often call for 125 g of butter, half a block. A US stick is 113 grams, so 125 g is one stick plus a scant tablespoon. If you swap in a single stick, you're about 12 grams short, which is fine in muffins but noticeable in shortbread.

The yogurt pot cake

The French yogurt cake uses a 125-gram yogurt pot as its measuring cup: one pot of yogurt, then pots of sugar, flour and oil, all measured by volume in the same empty pot. If you don't have the pot, 125 g of yogurt is about ½ cup + 2 ½ tsp, and you can use that same measure for the other ingredients.

Liquids at 125 grams

Milk, buttermilk and cream all land close to ½ cup at 125 grams: milk is ½ cup + ½ tsp and heavy cream ½ cup + 1 ½ tsp. Oil is lighter, so 125 g of vegetable oil takes up more room: ½ cup + 2 tbsp + ½ tsp.
